Goizueta Business School Interview (cont'd)

What are some of the attractions of going to school in a city like Atlanta versus Boston, New York, or Chicago?

First of all, Atlanta is the third largest city in terms of corporate headquarters. In addition to multinational firms, there is a tremendous amount of entrepreneurial activity in this city. This provides a lot of job opportunities for our students and access to real-world business cases for our faculty.

Second, it's a truly international city. Atlanta has the world's busiest airport. There are direct flights to most of the major cities in the world, and certainly those in the United States, multiple times a day. That's a real advantage in terms of attracting top speakers to campus. There's a lot of international investment here, too. It's a wonderfully diverse city to live in.

Third, relative to other major cities in the United States – or the world, for that matter – Atlanta is a very affordable place to live. There are a wide variety of nice apartments near Emory's campus. It's very easy to find a place to live.

In terms of the social scene, there's a lot to do here! We have a vibrant music and arts community, and all the major sports – including professional football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey and soccer teams. We have terrific college sports teams, too. That adds a lot to the life of the city. Many of our MBA students are athletes in their own right. Given Atlanta's wonderful weather, our students can play tennis, jog or bicycle year-round. There are fabulous restaurants here, too, and great shopping.

Frankly, students come here from all over the world and when graduation comes, they often do not want to leave Atlanta. It's a young, vibrant and affordable international city.

How was the 2005-2006 admissions season for Goizueta?

It was very good. The last couple years have been challenging for MBA admissions officers. We have actually weathered the storm better than most, meaning that applications to a lot of top-tier programs dropped dramatically. Ours did not.

The good news is, applications were back up this year. We saw about a 15 percent increase in applications. The great news for Goizueta was that we not only saw an increase in application volume, but most importantly, our pool of candidates was exceptionally strong. We saw candidates with strong test scores, progressive work experience, impressive undergraduate academic records, and demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.

The leadership focus that we have developed has attracted outstanding applicants. We could not be happier with our incoming MBA class.

What general advice do you have for applicants?

Prepare for the GMAT, especially the quantitative part of the test. Our program is academically rigorous. In addition to having strong written and spoken English skills, candidates need to possess strong analytical abilities. We pay particular attention to an applicant's quantitative score on the GMAT and expect to see over a 50th percentile score on that section. Our average admitted student has a score in the 75th percentile or higher on the math section of the GMAT.

Make sure your resume is clear. It should delineate how your career has progressed and outline your work responsibilities in a clear fashion. Our assessment of the quality of the candidate's work experience is critically important to our admissions review process.

Please come and visit us. Visitors will have a tour and lunch and  can visit a class with a current student or meet with our Program Dean. Then they can have an interview with a member of the MBA Admissions Committee.

Interview with us, either on campus or when we are on the road, recruiting. While not required, an interview is strongly recommended. It is a key part of the application review process.

What's the best way for an applicant to differentiate him- or herself from the crowd?

First of all, be yourself. Let us get to know you. Again, I strongly recommend that you interview with us.

We also want you to explore all that Goizueta can offer you so that you can make the right MBA program decision.

Finally, let us know in specific terms how you have demonstrated leadership within your organization or made a difference within your community.
